Criteria for Evaluating of Usability Tests for a User's Guide

Effectiveness of results

The results should indicate specific changes to the document. 

Example:  Change the term “input” to “type” or add the phrase: “The Main screen will appear.”

Example of non-specific:  “Include more detail in the steps.”

 

Qualifications and interpretations of results

The report shows an awareness of the limitations of test subjects, testing materials, state of the document, and the testing situation.

 

Test design

The test design is appropriate for the kinds of usability issues posed by the user’s situation, the guide, and the program. 

 

The tester creates operational definitions for successful completion of usability tasks.

 

Quality of the report

The report makes it easy to see the results and recommended changes to the document.

 

The writing is clear, coherent, and edited for mistakes.

extensive with different kinds of tests
