Step 1: Document Objectives.  State the objectives of the document (from the documentation plan).

Step 2: Establish Test Criteria: Write ways to measure each of the document objectives.  How will you know that each objective has been met?

Step 3:  Choose the appropriate test:

  • Pick the best page layout/fonts/sizes, etc., from a selection of examples
  • Evaluate a rough draft of a tutorial or procedure
  • Rank document objectives to make sure they coincide with workplace objectives
  • Evaluate table of contents for task orientation and user-based sequence
  • Rate graphics styles according to user tastes
