Exercise: Read and Locate Tests

Follow the instructions below to adapt the guidelines for administering read and locate tests.

1. Write specific questions users will probably want answered when using your document. Examine the documentation you will use in your exercise. List the questions you think the user would ask.

 

 

2. Find five or more participants who represent your audience. Select two persons to act as your testers. What characteristics do they possess that would make them suitable testers?

 

 

 

3. Prepare to administer the test. Before administering the test, devise a question form for your testers to follow. Follow the guidelines for writing sample questions in order to record the following information:

  • If the participant can locate the information
  • If the participant can understand the information and correctly answer the questions.
  • How long it takes the participant to find the answer
  • What search mechanisms the participant used, such as indexes, lists of figures, and so on.

 

4. Tally and interpret the results. Determine an acceptable ratio of success for your test.

 

 

5. Revise your documentation accordingly. Make suggestions to increase the usability of the document.
