Style Checklist

q     Do your sentences emphasize actions the user can take rather than functions of the program?

q     Do your sentences use the active voice predominantly?

q     Have you reviewed your sentences to make sure they have first-reading clarity?

q     Have you avoided overly long and complicated sentences?

q     Do your sentences contain easy-to-use parallel phrases?

q     Have you included clarifying operational overviews in your documents?

q     Do your sentences reflect a performance orientation?

Analyze your style to make sure you avoid the following problems:

q     Overused and unexplained acronyms and abbreviations.

q     Confusing synonyms.

q     Overlong paragraphs and sentences.

q     Emphasis on the computer rather than the program.

q     Lack of connection between headings and topics.

q     Too formal tone.

q     Inappropriate humor.

q     Ambiguous task names.

q     Confusing statements of steps.

q     Omitted articles.
